TheseEyesGod It’s not free— they’re keeping a cut of the $5 membership— just like Spotify and Netflix charge a monthly subscription and pay out a fair percentage of that to record labels and studios or how Apple App Store splits revenue with app developers 70/30. Obviously, this will only work if they likely get somewhere north of Spotify’s 50 million subscribers since they’re charging less and likely keeping less. I don’t think Medium’s exact breakdown has been announced, but assume they keep $1/month— if they get to 50M subscribers, that’d get them ~$600M annual revenue ($50M/mo * 12).
